Legal Marketing FAQ

What do legal marketers do?

Legal marketers help law firms attract, develop, and retain business. Their responsibilities can range from brand strategy to highly technical client-acquisition work, depending on the firm and role.

In a large firm, legal marketers may manage pitches and proposals, client teams, rankings submissions, events, public relations, practice-group strategy, market research, CRM data, website content, social media, and business development coaching. In a consumer-facing firm, the role may also include SEO, paid advertising, reviews, landing pages, call tracking, intake analytics, conversion optimization, email campaigns, and lead nurturing.

Strong legal marketers translate the firm’s legal work into language clients understand. They identify which services and audiences are commercially attractive, research competitors, choose channels, coordinate campaigns, and measure results. They may also help attorneys develop personal brands, prepare for conferences, build referral relationships, or turn successful matters into compliant marketing assets.

An important part of the job is understanding professional-conduct constraints. Lawyers remain responsible for complying with applicable advertising rules even when outside agencies or internal staff execute the work. The best legal marketers therefore combine commercial judgment, communication skills, analytics, legal-industry knowledge, and operational discipline. Their value is not the volume of marketing activity they create, but whether that work contributes to better client acquisition and firm growth.
